Dear Ella: Am I Being Eased Out?

1 min read

Dear Ella,

I think they may be easing me out.

No one has said it.

But I’m no longer getting the interesting assignments. Meetings happen without me. People with less experience are being given opportunities I once would have been considered for.

I’m still useful.

I’m just less sure I’m part of the future.

Sincerely,

What's Next in New York

Dear Next,

Pay attention to the pattern.

Who gets invited? Who gets visibility? Who gets developed? Who gets asked to shape what comes next?

If the answers keep pointing away from you, that is information.

Then ask a bigger question than, How do I get them to see me again?

Ask:

What do I want this work to give me now, and what am I still willing to give it?

That is an integration issue.

You may decide to push for a different role, hire a coach and build additional skills, stay under different terms, build options outside the organization, or leave.

But stop waiting for someone else to define your future.

Ella’s note: Pay attention to where the organization is placing its future bets. Then decide where you want to place yours.
